The "oil" light came on. Checked the level, it read fine, sort of... odd "smear" of oil. Took it to David's cause they are "local", and had many good references from folks on FB-The Colony Chatter. They called me back next day, said there was oil leaking from head gasket, main seal, other spots... saying that was probably the cause of the light. Their suggested solution... being that it's an older car (2004 4Runner) with that many leaks... "replace the engine". Price? $7000. Before driving it home, I asked if they'd checked the oil level, topped it off if needed so I could drive home... the guy replied that they did. I got home, oil light still illuminated brightly, and on a whim, crawled under the thing and dropped the oil. Probably DOUBLE the amount came out. At least 10 quarts. These boneheads missed the obvious by simply not checking the oil level on the dip stick and/or draining it. I was charged $134 for an "inspection", which resulted in me being told that I needed to replace the engine, and then... actually sent home with the oil level grossly overfilled (process of deduction... Wallyworld had double filled it when I was in for the oil change the day before this problem started.) With the oil drained and redone along with a new filter (all done in my driveway, by me, so I know it was done correctly) the oil light hasn't lit up since then. Oh, and my engine does not have ANY signs of oil leaks, anywhere. They are either unknowledgsble/inexperienced/ineffective mechanics, or simply out to scam your money. I don't know which is worse.
